Court & Spark

COURT AND SPARK is a project conceived by Lucy Pickering, to reinterpret and perform some of Joni Mitchell’s finest songs from the 1970’s to 1990’s – the era that saw album releases such as Hejira, Court & Spark and Taming The Tiger. This was the era when Joni Mitchell began to look beyond her folk roots, and worked with Pat Metheny, Jaco Pastorius and Wayne Shorter. Some of her greatest songs come from these fruitful creative partnerships, and many of them make a great starting point for exploration and development; something which we are delighted to be able to share and perform.

In 2016 Court & Spark played at Brighton’s Emporium Theatre Bar, and to a full house at The Verdict Jazz Club in Brighton. Audience responses and reviews were very favourable:

“within the sensitive playing and superb solos from all musicians there is, all-at-once, a sense of respect, fun, seriousness, communication, wit and charm…
The audience were both courted and sparked. And we clearly loved it" - Lou Beckerman (Sussex Jazz Mag, Dec 2016)

Terry Pack (Bass)

some text

With a career spanning more than four decades, and including spells with The Enid, Cozy Powell, Graham Bonnet and Steve Hackett to name but a few, Terry has in recent years turned his focus onto jazz and improvised music. His recent collaborations read like a Who’s Who of the British jazz scene (Claire Martin, The Cloggz, Ben Castle, Bobby Wellins, Nigel Price, Martin France). Terry is the bandleader and composer at the heart of Trees, an unfeasibly large ensemble who perform an eclectic mix of contemporary and groove based compositions.
